Building Bridges: Difficult Conversations Steps to a More Collaborative Workplace

Conflict in the workplace is inevitable, but it's also one of the greatest opportunities for growth, innovation, and for some of us, spiritual maturity.

Step 1: Prepare Yourself

Before engaging in a difficult conversation, take time to prepare. Consider what outcome you hope to achieve.

Step 2: Set the Stage

Choose an appropriate time and place for the conversation. Ensure privacy and adequate time to discuss the issues.

Step 3: Listen Actively

Listening is the most important skill in any difficult conversation. Seek to understand before being understood.

Step 4: Speak Your Truth

Share your perspective honestly and respectfully using "I" statements and focusing on specific behaviors rather than character judgments.

Step 5: Find Common Ground

Identify shared goals and values that can serve as a foundation for moving forward together.

Step 6: Create an Action Plan

Agree on specific steps each person will take going forward, with clear timelines and follow-up plans.
